Key Points of Lighting Design in Bathroom

Sep 28,2025 | elegaLight

Bathroom and Vanity Lighting Must Consider Shadows

taking bath while listening to music or watching TV is no longer unusual. With proper lighting, the bathroom is not just a functional space but can also be a place for relaxation. Vanity lighting often uses white frosted glass shades or waterproof downlights to provide a soft and even glow.

In addition, since a vanity always includes a mirror, lighting must avoid casting unnatural shadows. To make reflections in the mirror more flattering, low-wattage incandescent lamps or frosted glass bulbs are often installed around the mirror. However, such lighting can sometimes give a dim or gloomy impression. For grooming tasks such as styling hair, it is recommended to install lights on both sides of the mirror to avoid unnatural shadows on the face.

Components of Vanity and Bathroom Lighting

Bathroom and vanity lighting generally includes three parts:

A. Task lighting for the sink/vanity

- Mirror lighting should enhance the appearance of reflections while avoiding glare. Fixtures are usually placed above or on either side of the mirror, using frosted glass or diffused light sources.

B. General lighting for the vanity area

 - To provide better facial lighting, daylight-colored bulbs or LED fixtures are recommended.

C. General lighting for the bathroom

- All fixtures used in bathrooms must be moisture-resistant.

Bathroom Lighting Considerations

If lighting fixtures are installed on the bathtub side (opposite the window), the user’s silhouette may appear on the frosted glass of the window. To prevent this, fixtures should be placed as shown in the illustration. In addition, when a person is soaking in the bathtub, the fixtures must be positioned outside their direct line of sight.

If the bathroom has a window, particular attention must be paid to the placement of lighting to ensure that the user’s silhouette is not projected onto the frosted glass.

Vanity Lighting Considerations

Using ceiling-mounted lighting alone often casts shadows on the face.

Installing lights on both sides of the mirror helps evenly illuminate the face, preventing unnatural shadows. A recommended choice is 10W daylight bulbs.

Outdoor Lighting for Bathrooms with Gardens

If a bathroom opens to a garden, outdoor lighting can create a pleasant view.

Fixtures must be rated for outdoor use. Wall-mounted floodlights or pole-mounted spotlights can illuminate the ground or highlight trees and plants.

Recessed ground lights are also an option, but care must be taken with waterproofing and electrical safety.

Fixtures should not be placed where they are visible from inside the bathroom, in order to avoid glare.

Light distribution should be adjusted so that brightness from inside the bathroom does not overwhelm the outdoor scene. Avoid light spilling into neighboring spaces.

Examples of Vanity and Bathroom Lighting

In the photo example, fixtures are placed along the outer wall of the bathroom. Wall-mounted spotlights highlight specific areas and create a layered effect.

The design emphasizes continuity between the vanity and bathroom areas, with consistent fixture styles used throughout.

All fixtures installed in bathrooms must be waterproof and rated for wet areas. Fixtures near bathtubs, showers, or ceilings must be selected carefully, ensuring safety and durability.

Thoughtful lighting design for vanity and bathroom spaces goes beyond simple illumination. By carefully positioning fixtures to avoid shadows, glare, and unwanted silhouettes, while ensuring moisture resistance and comfort, these private areas become both functional and inviting. Whether for grooming at the vanity, relaxing in the bathtub, or enjoying a view to the backyard, well-planned lighting enhances both safety and atmosphere, turning everyday routines into moments of ease and comfort.
